Moments before the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health opened its doors to the public for the first time on July 1, faculty and staff whirled around the new state-of-the-art facility to ensure everything would be perfect before their first patient arrived — 22-year-old Tyler Staab.
Tyler has been a patient of the team for over a decade and was diagnosed with dystonia when he was 7. Following his diagnosis, his parents Rick and Michelle Staab, dove into a passionate pursuit to organize, donate and fundraise to support UF Health’s movement disorders program with the hope of one day curing DYT1 dystonia. They launched Tyler’s Hope for a Dystonia Cure, one of the driving forces behind the creation of the new Fixel Institute building.
After his appointment, Tyler posed for a photo in the patient lounge, which features a plaque in honor of the foundation’s support. Tyler maintains an active lifestyle and heads up his own company specializing in photography and videography.
